Israel and Carl Jung’s ‘rivers of blood’
Certain things are deeply unpleasant to talk about, and worst-case scenarios are one of them. Jews, of course, have a weakness for assuming the worst, mainly because throughout our history it has often proved prescient. Nonetheless, the natural reaction to unpleasant facts is usually denial, which tends to be a guarantor that the worst will eventually happened.
These unpleasant realities have been much on my mind since the May war between Israel and Hamas, and especially the Israeli-Arab riots that took place during the fighting. My thoughts on the matter have solidified in recent weeks, with the outbreak of riots among the Negev Bedouin and the ongoing tension in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. Inherent in the latter is the possibility of setting off yet another war, which could well mean more riots and civil unrest within Israel itself.
